    The Minneapolis Truckers’ Strike of 1934 was a fight for workers right to form a union. It was a watershed moment for the labor movement as well as for societal transformation and the settlement made Minneapolis a Union Town. On the strike’s 90th anniversary the exhibit explores the relationship of history to the present as well as workers’ role in social change.

Note: Community Education uses a sliding scale model for program fees so our programs can be financially sustainable and more equitable. Participants are asked to pick the price that they are able to pay. By more clearly articulating our lower cost options, we have removed the barrier that some may have felt in making scholarship requests. When participants sign up at the higher price levels, they help make the program more sustainable.

    When you take the AARP Smart Driver course, you could be eligible for a multi-year discount on your auto insurance. Plus safer driving can save you more than just money. The course teaches proven driving techniques to help keep you and your loved ones safe on the road. Additionally, you’ll learn: Important facts about the effects of medication on driving. How to reduce driver distractions. How to maintain the proper following distance behind another car. Proper use of safety belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes and new technology found in cars today. Techniques for handling left turns, right-of-way, and roundabouts. Age-related physical changes and how to adjust your driving to compensate. This 4-hour course is a three-year refresher for anyone who has previously taken an 8-hour initial course. AARP Members get $5 off this class: select the AARP member price ($24 in the drop-down price options) when you register online and include your AARP number when prompted OR… mention this discount when you register over the phone or by mail.   • Foreign Policy Discussion: Middle East Realignment (Roosevelt 55+)

    The United States and Middle East are at a crossroads. In spite of a reduced presence in the Middle East, the U.S. still has significant national interests there and the area is a key arena for global power politics. Can the U.S. continue to defend its interests in the Middle East and globally with a lower level of military and political involvement, or should it recommit to a leading role in the region? Through the nationwide Great Decisions program, learn more about vital foreign policy issues facing our country. The sessions feature lectures and lively discussions with local college professors and other guest speakers. We discuss the top scams currently being directed towards seniors and highlight why seniors are specifically targeted. We’ll offer tips on how to avoid falling for scams and where to get help.
  • Guthrie Theater: "Little Shop of Horrors" (Southwest)

    NOTE: The $39 seats are sold out so we added more in the $45 section. Join us at the Guthrie Theater for a frightfully funny musical. On Skid Row, Mr. Mushnik plans to shutter his failing florist shop when his timid staffer Seymour presents an exotic-but-wilted flytrap named Audrey II. Convinced it will boost business, Seymour encourages Mr. Mushnik to display the peculiar plant, which Seymour successfully revives. As Audrey II draws much-needed crowds to the shop, Seymour makes a disturbing discovery: It needs fresh blood (and lots of it) to grow — a secret that forces Seymour into a Faustian bargain to keep his fame and fortune intact. A hilarious mashup of science fiction, horror and musical theater, this cult-classic boasts Motown-inspired hits like “Feed Me (Git It),” “Suddenly, Seymour” and “Little Shop of Horrors."
